Centre doubles allocation of 5-kg cylinders to states, UTs in relief for migrants

PTC News Desk: In a significant development, the Centre has decided to double the allocation of 5 kg cylinders to states and Union Territories to provide relief to migrant labourers.

The 5kg Free Trade LPG cylinder, also known as Chhotu, was launched to cater to migrant section of the society. Unlike the regular domestic gas connections that requires the consumer to submit address proof, this 5 kg cylinder can be easily bought by just showing an identity proof. There are buyback plans, too.

In a letter to all chief secretaries on Tuesday, Union Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal has conveyed the decision.

The Secretary has said, “The daily quantity of 5kg FTL cylinders in each state available for disbursal to migrant labourers is being doubled based on average daily supply (of cylinders) during March 2 and 3. These 5kg FTL cylinders will be at the disposal of state government and its Food/Civil Supplies Department for supplying only to migrant labourers in their state, with the assistance of oil marketing companies.”

The letter explicitly mentiones that the additional 5 kg cylinders allocated to the state governments are only to be sold to migrant labourers. The Oil Marketing Companies will helt facilitate the supply.

The move aims to ensure adequate cooking fuel is available to migrant workers and other vulnerable sections of society.
