China pneumonia outbreak: To proactively address clusters of respiratory illness in children reported in certain parts of China, the Indian government is initiating comprehensive tracking of serious respiratory diseases. Following the Centre's directive to review readiness in light of an increase in respiratory illnesses among children in China, six states Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu have been put in alert mode.
The hospitals and health workers has been directed to be ready to treat patients with respiratory problems.
States and Union territories are advised to implement the 'Operational Guidelines for Revised Surveillance Strategy in the context of COVID-19,' emphasising integrated surveillance of respiratory pathogens causing ILI and SARI.
The Karnataka health department also warned residents about the seasonal flu and issued the advisory which includes dos and don'ts as well as a list of seasonal flu symptoms and risk factors.
In the advisory issued by Rajasthan health department, the authorities and health experts stated that though the situation is not worrisome at present but all the hospitals and healthcare workers to be prepared with the medical equipments to prevent the infectious diseases.
In the advisory issued by Gujarat health department, the authorities and health experts ordered to strengthen the precautionary measures in view of surge in respiratory illnesses among children in China.
In the advisory issued by Uttarakhand health department, Uttarakhand government directed health officials to step up surveillance for cases of respiratory illnesses.
Stressing and highlighting the surge in respiratory illnesses among children in China, Haryana government directed that any case or cluster of respiratory illnesses must be reported immediately.
China has reported an increase in respiratory illnesses in children since mid-October, attributed to the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions and the onset of the cold season.
The WHO is monitoring the situation, and while no cause for alarm is identified, the Indian Health Ministry is taking precautionary measures. Immediate reviews of public health and hospital preparedness, resource availability, and infection control practices are underway to ensure citizen safety and well-being.
