Cold wave likely in Delhi, northern regions around Christmas; western disturbance to bring snowfall and rain

New Delhi, December 15:  Meteorologists predict severe cold wave-like conditions in Delhi and surrounding areas during the Christmas period, with anticipated light rain across North India leading to a significant drop in daytime temperatures. Delhi experienced a minimum temperature of 4.9 degrees Celsius, nearly two notches lower than Shimla's 6.8 degrees Celsius in Himachal Pradesh.

According to weather experts, Friday marked Delhi's coldest day this season, with Hisar in Haryana recording a chilling low of 4.2 degrees Celsius. As per information, temperatures are likely to decrease further in the upcoming days post snowfall in the Himalayan states, potentially resulting in rainfall across plains, including Delhi.

"A western disturbance is expected around December 16 and 17, likely to cause snowfall in the hills and rains in the plains. Subsequently, heavy snowfall is likely between December 23 and 25, affecting temperatures in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. This could bring drizzle and light rainfall, accompanied by dense fog, thus maintaining low daytime temperatures," explained a weather expert.

Western disturbances, known for bringing winter rains to North India, are anticipated to influence the weather pattern during this period. Although temperatures are plummeting, Delhi hasn't entered a cold wave yet, as daytime temperatures remain relatively higher.

Shimla might feel colder due to its maximum temperature not exceeding 15 degrees Celsius, whereas Delhi's mercury rises significantly during the day, reaching approximately 24 degrees Celsius after the initial morning drop.

Further, cold weather is likely to prevail from the second week of December until the second week of January.
