Cyclone Arnab weather update: Heavy rain, flood and landslide alert across 9 states
PTC Web Desk: Cyclone Arnab has weakened after forming over the Bay of Bengal, but its impact is still being felt across several parts of India. Heavy rain, strong winds and the risk of flooding and landslides have been reported in multiple states.
In Uttar Pradesh, around 50 cities have received intermittent rain over the past 24 hours. Lucknow remained under dark, cloudy skies on Friday morning, with rain and strong winds continuing in several areas. In rural parts of the state, gusty winds have damaged standing crops, while waterlogging has been reported in agricultural fields.
Landslide in Sikkim
Continuous rainfall triggered a landslide in Rimbi village of Gyalshing district in Sikkim late Thursday night. More than 20 houses and government quarters were swept away in the incident. No deaths have been reported so far.
Odisha is also facing the possibility of flash floods and landslides due to the weather system. Authorities have shifted around 10,000 people living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas of southern and western Odisha to nearly 200 relief centres.
The weather system has affected several parts of the country, with heavy rain expected in Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana over the next 24 hours. Strong winds of around 50-60 kmph, along with thunderstorms and lightning, are also possible in these areas.
Heavy rain disrupts life in Jharkhand
Several parts of Jharkhand witnessed heavy rain on Friday, leading to uprooted trees and electricity poles. Vehicular movement and power supply were affected in a number of areas.
In Ranchi, a tree fell on a school bus. All children travelling in the bus were reported safe.
Bad weather also disrupted air services at Birsa Munda Airport. At least five flights had been cancelled by 2 pm on Friday due to poor weather conditions. Several schools in Ranchi were also closed in view of the heavy rain.
Uttarakhand sees fresh spell of rain
The monsoon has become active again in Uttarakhand, with intermittent rain reported in Dehradun, Nainital and Haridwar.
Heavy rain late Thursday night forced visitors to leave the ghats at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar and move to safer places.
In Chamoli, a landslide blocked the Karnaprayag-Gairsain highway. A scooter was trapped under the debris, although the rider narrowly escaped.
Heavy snowfall was also reported in the Chakratirth area along the Badrinath-Satopanth route.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall in Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar.
Rain changes weather in Uttar Pradesh
The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has also changed weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh. Rain has been reported in Lucknow, Kanpur, Unnao, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Jaunpur, among other cities.
Lucknow has experienced light rain and strong winds for nearly 20 hours, with temperatures dropping enough to bring a slight chill to the air.
Himachal Pradesh to remain wet
Although the southwest monsoon has started withdrawing from some parts of the country, it remains active over Himachal Pradesh.
According to the IMD forecast, rain is likely to continue in the state for the next five days. A western disturbance is expected to keep the weather unsettled between September 25 and 30.
Rain expected in Haryana
Weather conditions are also expected to change across Haryana from Friday. Rain is possible in eastern districts, including Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Palwal and Faridabad. Some neighbouring areas may receive light showers.
The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coast, with its effects now extending into Jharkhand. Rain has been occurring across the state since Wednesday, while heavy showers were recorded in Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti and several other districts on Thursday.
Bihar, MP also on rain alert
While the southwest monsoon has begun retreating from parts of northwest India, Bihar continues to receive widespread rain.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for 19 districts on Friday. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are possible in these areas.
In Madhya Pradesh, heavy rain is expected across several parts of the state. An orange alert for very heavy rainfall has been issued for 13 districts, including Jabalpur, while 16 other districts are likely to receive heavy rain. Some areas could receive more than four inches of rain over the next 24 hours.
Rajasthan records September heat
While several states are battling rain, Rajasthan is experiencing intense heat. Jaisalmer and Barmer recorded temperatures above 43°C for the second consecutive day. The readings are among the highest recorded in September in the state in around 15 years.
Barmer recorded a maximum temperature of 43.6°C, while Jaisalmer touched 43.2°C on Thursday. Temperatures also crossed 40°C in Jodhpur, Churu and Bikaner.
Weather outlook for September 26-27
September 26: Heavy rain is likely in Uttarakhand. Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh may receive very heavy rain in some areas. Rain is also expected in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim. Uttar Pradesh may experience strong winds of 50-60 kmph.
September 27: Heavy to very heavy rain is possible at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Parts of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh may receive heavy rain. Thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph are possible in some areas. Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh may see thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 30-40 kmph.
