Cyclone Biparjoy: Severe storm weakens into ‘deep depression,’ know what will happen next

Cyclone Biparjoy: After making a destructive landfall in coastal areas of Gujarat, Cyclone Biparjoy also referred to as ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ has weakened into a ‘deep depression’ and is likely to weaken more into ‘depression’ in next 12 hours,  said India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday. 

As per the reports by IMD, the cyclonic storm weakened into a 'deep depression' at 11:30 pm on Friday. 


Meanwhile, IMD also took to its official Twitter handle and wrote that,  "Cyclonic Storm Biparjoy weakened into a Deep Depression at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, the 16th June, 2023 over Southeast Pakistan adjoining Southwest Rajasthan and Kutch about 100 km northeast of Dholavira. To weaken further into a Depression during next 12 hours."

    

Cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat

Notably, nearly 12 hours after cyclonic storm Biparjoy made a landfall on the Jakhau port in Gujarat coast, a trail of destruction is clearly visible and Kutch is still facing the impact.

The cyclone, which originated in the Arabian Sea and swept across the west coast of India made landfall on Thursday night.   According to NDRF, the evacuated civilians include 82 males, 27 females and Children 15 children.   

Strong winds and rain from cyclone Biparjoy caused a power failure in Gujarat's Jamnagar district.


800 trees had been uprooted and  and 500 houses were damaged (mostly Kacchha houses and hutments). About 1,000 villages were without power. 

Cyclone Biparjoy has affected the trains services due to which around 99 trains running through, originating or terminating in Biparjoy-affected areas of Gujarat, will remain cancelled or short-terminated, the Western Railway said.

Cyclone Biparjoy Landfall in Rajasthan 

The IMD has issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall in Rajasthan on June 17 as the cyclone progresses northwestward. They have also cautioned about potential damage to temporary structures, falling trees and branches, and high tides due to the cyclone's impact.
