Delhi-NCR weather update: IMD issues red alert for Gurugram, orange alert for Delhi and Noida

PTC Web Desk: After days of extreme heat across North India, residents of Delhi-NCR are finally set to get relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for several areas in the region.

The IMD has placed Gurugram under a red alert, while Delhi and Noida remain under an orange alert due to the possibility of strong thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.

According to weather officials, winds may blow at speeds of 60 to 80 kmph during the storm. Some areas may also witness hailstorms and dust storms before the rain begins.

The sudden weather change comes after a severe heatwave that pushed daytime temperatures between 44°C and 46°C across Delhi-NCR. Even nights remained unusually hot, making daily life difficult for people and increasing electricity demand across the region.

Meteorologists said the weather system is developing near the Rajasthan-Haryana border and moving towards Delhi-NCR. Satellite images showed dense cloud cover spreading from areas near Ganganagar towards Delhi and Agra.

The IMD said light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning is likely in Delhi-NCR, parts of Haryana including Rohtak and Rewari, and Rajasthan’s Alwar district over the next few hours.

The main impact in Delhi-NCR is expected between 6:15 pm and 9 pm. Strong winds may first bring dust storms and reduce visibility in many areas. People have been advised to stay indoors during the peak storm hours and avoid unnecessary travel.

Officials have also asked residents to secure loose objects,  park vehicles safely and stay away from trees and electric poles during thunderstorms.

The rain is expected to lower temperatures by nearly 7°C to 10°C, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat.

Before reaching Delhi-NCR, the storm activity is likely to affect several parts of Haryana between 4:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Punjab may witness thunderstorms from 5:30 pm onwards, while Chandigarh could see strong weather activity later in the evening.

In Uttar Pradesh, western districts are expected to receive rain and thunderstorms between 5 pm and 11 pm, with northwestern areas likely to be affected later during the night.
