Former Barnala MLA Kewal Singh Dhillon named new Punjab BJP president as Jakhar's tenure ends
PTC News Desk: Former Barnala MLA and a close confidante of former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh Kewal Singh Dhillon has been appointed new president of Punjab BJP as incumbent party chief Sunil Jakhar's three-year tenure gets completed.
According to the sources, Sunil Jakhar will continue to play significant role in spearheading the party’s campaign for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, who oversees Punjab affairs in the party’s central leadership, has reportedly been pushing for a Sikh face to lead the state unit. The BJP’s leadership and voter base in Punjab have traditionally been dominated by Hindus.
Dhillon, 75, hails from Tallewal village in Barnala district. He served as an MLA from Barnala between 2007 and 2017 before losing the seat to AAP leader Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in the 2017 Assembly elections.
He joined the BJP in June 2022 along with several former Congress leaders who switched sides following the Congress party’s crushing defeat in the Punjab Assembly polls. Later, he was appointed vice-president of the Punjab BJP unit.
Dhillon also shares a long political association with Capt Amarinder Singh, who himself joined the BJP after launching the Punjab Lok Congress. This connection is believed to give Dhillon access to Amarinder’s support base in the Malwa region.
