Delhi tragedy: Another life lost to civic negligence as office-goer dies after falling into open pit
PTC Web Desk: A routine journey home turned fatal for a young Delhi office employee, whose disappearance overnight ended in tragedy on Friday morning. Kamal, a resident of Kailashpuri, was found dead inside an uncovered water board pit in Janakpuri, hours after his family raised alarm over his sudden loss of contact.
Kamal had left his office in Rohini but never reached home. As his phone remained unreachable, panic gripped the family, prompting them to search through the night. Relatives visited multiple police stations, including Janakpuri, Sagar Pur, Vikas Puri and Rohini, desperately seeking clues about his whereabouts.
Police officials said teams worked alongside the family through the night after tracking the mobile phone’s last known location. “We were continuously searching the area. The phone tower location was available, but narrowing down the exact spot took time. Claims that no action was taken are incorrect,” a police source said.
The search came to a grim end around 7.30 am when Kamal’s body was discovered inside an open pit, with his motorcycle lying nearby. The site, reportedly dug for water or road-related work, had no barricades or warning signs.
Preliminary findings suggest Kamal died due to injuries sustained from the fall. Investigators are now analysing CCTV footage from surrounding areas to piece together his final movements.
However, the family has raised serious questions over civic negligence. They alleged that the uncovered pit on a busy road posed a grave danger and claimed timely intervention could have saved Kamal’s life. A relative also stated that foul play cannot be ruled out, suggesting the possibility that he may have been pushed.
AAP councillor Raminder Kaur, Ward 100, said the pit was part of ongoing PWD work and had remained open for months. “There were no barricades, no fencing and poor lighting. Roads are being dug without safeguards, leading to repeated accidents,” she said.
Following the uproar, Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood has ordered a formal inquiry to fix responsibility and prevent similar incidents in the future.
