'Differences over moving abroad, divorced in 2012': Ex-husband of Jaish-linked suspect Dr Shaheen
PTC News Desk: As the investigation into the Red Fort blast case expands, agencies have now turned their attention to Zafar Hayat, the former husband of Dr. Shaheen Shahid, who was recently arrested for her alleged role in the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)-linked “white-collar” Faridabad terror module.
Officials from the crime branch questioned Hayat, a doctor based in Kanpur, at his office. He confirmed that his marriage to Shaheen, who hails from Lucknow, ended in 2013. “It was an arranged marriage, and since our separation in 2013, I’ve had no contact with her,” he stated.
"There was no such conflict between us. After our marriage, she moved to Kanpur with me and we started our respective practices. Our marriage ended because Shaheen wanted to move to Europe or Australia as she thought that it would be better for us in terms of our employment chances and a brighter future. But I wasn't willing to leave India," he added.
He disclosed additional details about their family, revealing that the couple has two children. "As Shaheen left home at the time of divorce, they are both with me now. I have not told them about what is being said about their mother in the news."
When asked if he had ever suspected Shaheen of holding extremist views during their marriage, he replied, “Absolutely not, never. We are liberal and educated people who have lived peacefully as members of society. There’s no shock value in what’s being discovered, as there’s no emotional connection anymore.”
Hayat further said after she left Kanpur, he had no information about Shaheen's whereabouts nor what she was doing currently.
