PTC News Desk: The high-stakes Assembly election in West Bengal will take place in two phases—on April 23 and April 29—while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

The Election Commission of India announced the poll dates for Assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Except for West Bengal, voting in all the other regions will be held in a single phase. In the previous election, polling in West Bengal was conducted over eight phases and lasted for more than a month.

The upcoming elections are expected to be a crucial mid-term test for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), following its decisive victories in Bihar and Delhi. The polls will gauge the strength of incumbent governments, while key issues such as language, Centre–State relations, and immigration are likely to dominate the campaign across most of the states heading to elections.
