Explosives recovered at Bengaluru’s bus stand; police, ATS launch investigation

PTC Web Desk:  A security scare was reported at Bengaluru’s Kalasipalya BMTC bus stand after six gelatin sticks and detonators were discovered near the premises, prompting swift action from the local police and Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).

The suspicious materials, wrapped in a plastic bag, were found outside a public toilet within the busy bus stand area. Officials from the Kalasipalya police station and ATS cordoned off the site and conducted a thorough examination following the alert.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) confirmed the recovery, stating, “Six gelatin sticks and a few detonators were found separately in a carry bag left outside the toilet. An FIR is yet to be filed, and the investigation is ongoing.”

An eyewitness, who works at the toilet, said, “A person came to use the facility and left a bag behind. Since people often return for forgotten items, we kept it aside. When no one showed up, we alerted the security personnel.”

The authorities have yet to determine the origin of the explosives, and no suspects have been identified so far. The incident has raised concerns about public safety in one of Bengaluru’s busiest transportation hubs.

What are gelatin sticks?

Gelatin sticks are low-cost industrial explosives commonly used in mining, construction, and infrastructure projects like tunnel and road development. However, these explosives are inert unless paired with a detonator, which is necessary to trigger them.
