Good news for consumers: Centre slashes wholesale tomato price to Rs 80/kg
New Delhi, July 16: For consumers who were obliged to avoid tomatoes after their costs skyrocketed across the country, the Centre dropped the wholesale price of tomatoes from Rs 90 to Rs 80 per kg on Sunday.
According to an official release, the Centre decided to modify tomato prices after reassessing the present market situation. The price changes will take effect on Sunday, July 16, in Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Arrah, through the National Agriculture Cooperation Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Consumer Cooperation Federation (NCCF). It will be expanded to more cities based on market prices in the current areas.
Tomato prices were originally raised on July 14 to Rs 90 per kg.
Vishal Singh, the head of the NCCF, stated that fresh consignments of tomatoes had come from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
The recent rise in tomato prices has impacted consumers across the country.
Tomato prices in major cities surged, hitting unprecedented levels of Rs. 150-160 per kg.
The increase in tomato and other vegetable costs was reflected in the June retail inflation data.
Wholesale inflation, which measures the growth in the pricing of goods at the wholesale level, was 8.39% in October but has subsequently declined.
Until September, wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation had been in the double digits for a continuous period of 18 months.
Retail inflation, which reflects consumer price changes, increased sharply in June, hitting 4.81%.
This hike was mostly driven by a significant increase in vegetable prices. Prices for vegetables, meat and fish, eggs, pulses and products and spices all increased noticeably.
Retail inflation fell to 4.31% in May, a two-year low. However, it increased to 4.7% in April from 5.7% the prior month.
