Governor reshuffle: President appoints new governors to Haryana, Goa; J&K ex-Deputy CM gets Ladakh charge

PTC News Desk: In a significant reshuffle, the President has appointed new governors for Haryana and Goa and a new Lieutenant Governor for the Union Territory of Ladakh.


Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh has been appointed as the Governor of Haryana, while Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju will take over as the Governor of Goa.

Additionally former Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta has been charged with ladakh after the President accepted the resignation of Brig BD Mishra (Retd) from the post of Lt Governor of Ladakh.

Who is the new Governor of Goa?

Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, a senior leader of the Telugu Desam Party, hails from the royal Pusapati family of Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh. A seasoned politician, he has been elected as an MLA seven times and has served in both state and central governments.

In 2014, he won the Vizianagaram Lok Sabha seat and subsequently became the Union Civil Aviation Minister in the first Modi government. He held the post for nearly four years before stepping down over the issue of special status for Andhra Pradesh.

During his tenure, Raju spearheaded the UDAN regional connectivity initiative, launched several airport projects—including those in Rajamahendravaram and Kadapa—and introduced a no-fly list for unruly passengers.

Who is the new Governor of Haryana?

Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh, an experienced politician and academic, has been appointed as the new Governor of Haryana. Born in 1944 in Howrah, he graduated in political science from Vidyasagar College, Kolkata, and later became a professor in the subject.

He joined the BJP in 1991 and served as its West Bengal state president from 1999 to 2002, playing a key role in strengthening the party’s grassroots base. Between 2003 and 2005, he also served as the BJP's observer for Tripura, contributing to the party's expansion in the Northeast.

Who is the new Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh?

Kavinder Gupta, a senior BJP leader from Jammu and Kashmir with longstanding ties to the RSS, has been named the new Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.

He holds the distinction of being elected Mayor of Jammu three times in a row between 2005 and 2010. Gupta also briefly served as Deputy Chief Minister in the PDP-BJP coalition government led by Mehbooba Mufti, resigning after 51 days when the BJP pulled out of the alliance in June 2018.
