Gurugram bomb hoax case: Bangladeshi national arrested for sending threat emails to schools

PTC Web Desk:  The Gurugram police have arrested a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national for allegedly sending hoax bomb threat emails to several schools in the city, triggering panic and large-scale security checks.

According to officials, the accused, identified as Saurabh Biswas alias Michael, had sent emails on January 28 warning of bombs planted in schools. Acting on the alerts, police teams rushed to the locations, accompanied by dog squads, bomb disposal units and fire brigade personnel. However, no explosives were found during the extensive searches.

Following complaints from school authorities, a case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station. Gurugram police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar said the emails were intended to create fear and disrupt normal functioning.

The Cyber Crime unit later traced and apprehended the accused from Gujarat. During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused is originally from Bangladesh and had entered India illegally around nine years ago. He had been living in West Bengal using forged documents.

The police further stated that the accused initially worked as a labourer but later acquired skills in digital marketing and graphic design. For the past five years, he had been working as a freelancer in the digital domain.

Investigations revealed that he was part of a Facebook group where he came in contact with a Bangladeshi individual identified as Mamunur Rashid. The accused allegedly shared nearly 300 Gmail IDs with him in exchange for around 250 USDT (cryptocurrency). One of these email accounts was used to send the hoax bomb threats to schools in Gurugram.

The police have initiated proceedings to take the accused on remand. During further questioning, investigators will probe whether he has any links to terror organisations or other criminal networks.
