PTC News Desk: As Punjab is battling with one of worst floods in decades, Haryana government has urged the Bhkra Beas Management Board and Punjab to reduce the release of of water towards its canals.

The Haryana government in its letter said that the demand for the water supply has been reduced in view of the incessant rainfall.

The request has sparked concern as reducing the supply towards Haryana means levying additional pressure on the already overflowing rivers and reservoirs. Such a move can further worsen the already flooding situation in low lying areas of Punjab.

Earlier, the Haryana had demanded more water citing agricultural and drinking water needs. However, due to the continuous rainfall and rivers are in full spate, Punjab's neighbouring state has urged to reduce the supply.

The development has drawn significant attention as earlier Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini had assured solidarity and offered support to the flood-hit state.

Haryana's demands come at a time when Punjab itself is battling with flood crisis as the rivers are in spate, threatening to breach the embankments resulting in aggravation of the crisis.
