Highway closed, flights cancelled as fresh snowfall covers Kashmir, Srinagar sees season’s first snowfall
PTC Web Desk: Large parts of Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall on Friday, including Srinagar, which recorded its first snowfall of the season. The change in weather disrupted normal life across the valley.
Due to heavy snow accumulation, the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway was closed for traffic, while more than 20 flights were cancelled at Srinagar airport.
Officials said the plains of Kashmir received light to moderate snowfall, whereas higher and upper reaches experienced moderate to heavy snow. Around two inches of snow was recorded in the upper areas of Srinagar, while regions near the airport received three to four inches.
North Kashmir’s Gulmarg ski resort witnessed over two feet of fresh snowfall. In central Kashmir, Sonamarg in Ganderbal district received more than six inches of snow, while Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district recorded nearly three inches.
Moderate to heavy snowfall was reported from several areas of Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Shopian, Pulwama and Bandipora districts. Light to moderate snowfall occurred in Anantnag and Kulgam districts. Officials said snowfall was continuing in many areas till the last reports came in.
Rain was also reported from parts of Srinagar and a few other locations in the valley.
