IMD predicts above-normal rainfall in August and September across India
PTC Web Desk: India is expected to witness above-normal rainfall during the second half of the monsoon season — August and September — according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Addressing a virtual press briefing on Thursday, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that normal rainfall is likely across most parts of the country in August, excluding the northeastern states and some adjoining regions of East India.
Mohapatra further added that September is projected to receive above-normal rainfall, contributing to an overall surge in precipitation during the latter half of the southwest monsoon season.
"Overall, rainfall during August and September is likely to be 106 per cent of the long-period average (LPA) of 422.8 mm, which qualifies as above-normal," he said.
Region-wise, the IMD expects normal to above-normal rainfall across a majority of India. However, parts of the northeast, eastern fringes, isolated areas in central India, and the southwestern regions of peninsular India may see below-normal rainfall.
This forecast follows an already above-normal monsoon performance in June and July, during which several states, particularly Himachal Pradesh, experienced heavy downpours and flash floods.
