Independence Day 2023: Why no I-Day celebrations across Himachal Pradesh?
Independence Day 2023: In the wake of the calamity that has struck Himachal Pradesh in the past 24 hours, the decision has been made to forego cultural celebrations that were scheduled as part of the Independence Day events throughout the state on August 15.
The Chief Minister, providing an update, revealed that the toll from the disaster has tragically claimed the lives of 21 individuals thus far, and regrettably, this number continues to rise. The Chief Minister emphasised that ongoing efforts in relief and rescue operations remain a top priority.
Meanwhile, reports from meteorological sources indicate a glimmer of respite from the incessant rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, starting from today. However, the rest of the country is expected to witness light rain persisting over the next three to four days. Additionally, the forecast predicts the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall, interspersed with isolated heavy downpours, across regions including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura spanning August 15 to 18.
It is noteworthy that the state has been ravaged by landslides and cloud bursts due to the incessant rainfall over the past day, resulting in a significant loss of life. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu highlighted the extensive damage inflicted upon National Highways and State Highways across the region. He described how the unceasing 24-hour downpour wreaked havoc on the state. He also stressed that ongoing rescue operations are focused on saving lives and protecting the affected population.
