India all set to boost defence budget post-Operation Sindoor with Rs 50,000 crore supplementary allocation: Reports
PTC Web Desk: India’s defence preparedness is set to receive a significant financial boost, with the government proposing an additional Rs 50,000 crore for the armed forces through a supplementary budget. According to official sources, this extra allocation will likely be tabled and approved during the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
The enhanced funding is aimed at fast-tracking the procurement of cutting-edge weapons, advanced ammunition, and military technology. The focus will also extend to bolstering research and development initiatives critical to India’s long-term defence strategy.
This supplementary boost comes on the heels of Operation Sindoor, a highly successful counterterror operation that underscored India's military edge. Conducted without breaching international borders, the operation saw India demolish nine terror camps deep inside Pakistan-controlled territory. The mission marked a major milestone for the country’s defence forces, showcasing their superior capabilities and preparedness.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the operation as a turning point for indigenous defence manufacturing. “This operation proved the reliability of our Made-in-India weapons. The world now understands that India’s homegrown defence systems are battle-ready for modern warfare,” Modi said during a national address on May 12.
India’s air defence systems played a pivotal role during the conflict. The multi-tiered defence shield included the advanced Russian-made S-400 ‘Triumf’, the Barak-8 medium-range surface-to-air missile system, and the indigenously developed Akash missile. Legacy systems such as Pechora, OSA-AK, and LLAD (Low-Level Air Defence) guns were also effectively deployed to neutralise enemy drones and missiles.
This year’s Union Budget had already set a record with a Rs 6.81 lakh crore defence allocation — a 9.53% hike over the previous fiscal year. Since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government took charge in 2014, defence spending has nearly tripled. In 2014-15, the budget stood at Rs 2.29 lakh crore. The current allocation represents 13.45% of the total Union Budget, highlighting the strategic emphasis on national security.
