Jammu and Kashmir: Massive landslide in Udhampur buries petrol pump, traffic severely affected
PTC Web Desk: A major landslide struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Sunday, burying a Hindustan Petroleum petrol pump under debris in the Balli Nullah area. The incident brought down massive rocks and soil from the hillside, disrupting normal life in the region.
Officials confirmed that while there were no immediate reports of casualties, the damage to the petrol pump was extensive. Rescue teams, along with heavy machinery, were deployed to clear the debris and assess the losses.
Traffic movement along the Dhar Road stretch has been thrown out of gear, forcing the authorities to issue advisories urging commuters to take alternate routes until clearance operations are completed.
A local resident told ANI that the route at Dudhar Nallah remains blocked with large rocks. “People are very disturbed. It happened in the morning and such incidents have been recurring throughout this monsoon. A bus is helping stranded passengers cross the stretch to reach Udhampur,” he said.
Petrol pump owner Jai Pal Singh Jamwal said the landslide occurred around 7 pm on Sunday. “There was a visible crack in the nearby mountain, which put heavy pressure on the petrol pump, leading to the collapse,” he added.
Fortunately, no lives were lost as locals had already evacuated the site after noticing cracks on the mountain. “There was no loss of life, but the petrol pump has suffered major destruction. The landslide activity is still continuing,” a fire official added.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation as clearance work is underway.
