Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya to be executed in Yemen on July 16 over 2014 murder case
PTC Web Desk: Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse from Kerala, is scheduled to be executed in Yemen on July 16, following her conviction in the 2014 murder of a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mahdi. The Yemeni President had approved her death sentence in 2023, and the final date of execution has now been confirmed.
Nimisha Priya moved to Yemen in 2008 to financially support her family back in Kerala. Initially working across various hospitals, she later established her own medical clinic in 2014. As per Yemeni regulations, she was required to form a business partnership with a local citizen. This led her to associate with Talal Abdo Mahdi.
However, their partnership soon deteriorated. Priya reportedly lodged a complaint against Mahdi in 2016, leading to his arrest. Despite this, he was released shortly afterward and allegedly continued to harass and threaten her.
According to Nimisha’s family, in a desperate attempt to recover her confiscated passport, she administered sedatives to Mahdi. The overdose, however, proved fatal. Priya was apprehended while trying to leave the country and was convicted of premeditated murder in 2018.
Despite appeals for clemency and diplomatic efforts over the years, Yemen’s judiciary upheld her sentence. With no further legal recourse remaining, her execution is now slated for next Tuesday, July 16.
