Latest setback to Baba Ramdev: Uttarakhand cancels licence of 14 Patanjali products

PTC News Desk: In another setback to Baba Ramdev, the Uttarakhand government has cancelled the licenses of 14 products of Patanjali in an order dated April 15.

Further, Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna and Patanjali also face a criminal complaint for violating the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act.

The action comes during a Supreme Court hearing against Ramdev and Patanjali's managing director Balkrishna for violating court orders prohibiting Patanjali Ayurved from running misleading advertisements about health cures.

The Supreme Court is hearing the Indian Medical Association (IMA)'s 2022 plea, which alleges a smear campaign against the COVID-19 vaccination drive and modern medical procedures.

Last month, the court ordered Ramdev, his aide Acharya Balakrishnan, and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd to give a public apology for failing to follow its directives over misleading advertisements.

During the hearings last week, a bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah questioned Ramdev and Balkrishna about charges of contempt of court stemming from a series of advertisements claiming Patanjali products could cure various diseases, a clear violation of the top court's previous directives and Patanjali's undertaking in this regard.

Both Ramdev and Balkrishna delivered an "unconditional and unqualified apology" to the Supreme Court over Patanjali ads. The bench, however, later questioned them about the size and visibility of their apologies, compelling Patanjali to issue a new public apology in newspapers on Wednesday, April 24.
