Licence Renewal: Ola and Uber get HC relief, allowed to run on Chandigarh roads for now

PTC Web Desk: The ride-hailing companies Ola and Uber have received temporary respite from the Punjab and Haryana High Court until December 22, following a directive issued by the Chandigarh Administration to halt their operations in the city upon the expiry of their licenses.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has intervened, instructing the Chandigarh Administration to refrain from taking any punitive action against Ola and Uber until further orders. This directive comes in light of pending licence applications submitted by the companies to the administration.

Despite their licences having expired in November, Ola and Uber had applied for renewals under the new guidelines issued by the Central Government. The administration had earlier served notices to cease operations in the city due to the expiration of their licenses.

In response, both Ola and Uber moved the High Court, emphasising that their licence renewal applications are under consideration by the administration. They have urged that no adverse action be taken against them until a decision regarding their new licences is reached.

The next hearing regarding this matter is scheduled to take place on December 22.

Meanwhile, Bikram Singh, president of the Tricity Ola Uber Association, said  nearly 12,000 families were dependent on this profession and hundreds of people use Ola and Uber every day.
