Mamata Banerjee alleges attack on convoy, says stones pelted mud smeared on cars
PTC News Desk: Tension broke out in West Bengal’s Halishahar on Saturday when a group of protesters stopped the convoy of former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee was travelling to meet the family of a deceased TMC worker when protesters surrounded her vehicle. They allegedly threw mud, water bottles and footwear at the convoy. They also raised slogans against Banerjee, calling her a “thief” and the “queen of dacoits”.
The protest was linked to the death of a TMC worker whose family has alleged that he died after being assaulted in police custody. The family accused local police officers of beating him, leading to his death. The allegations have triggered anger and protests in the area.
Banerjee had gone to Halishahar to meet the grieving family amid the controversy over the alleged custodial death. However, protesters blocked her convoy before she could reach their home, resulting in a brief confrontation.
Police Intervene
Police teams quickly reached the spot and took steps to control the situation. Security personnel then escorted Banerjee’s convoy away from the area to ensure her safety.
After the incident, Banerjee alleged that “anti-social elements” threw large stones at her vehicle in front of police personnel.
She said the attack was so serious that if the car windows had been open, she could have suffered a potentially fatal head injury.
Banerjee also accused the police of failing to stop the protesters and alleged that they were “protecting the BJP”.
