New Delhi, May 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday took stock of the situation in Manipur through a video conference meeting with state Chief Minister N Biren Singh and top officials in the state and Centre.

Following orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), ten more companies (almost 1,000 personnel) of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were also dispatched to the violence-stricken state earlier in the day on Friday. The Home Minister was briefed in detail about the current situation in Manipur during a video conference meeting, and Shah, who is closely monitoring every development in the state, asked officials to maintain peace as soon as possible, according to sources.

Following reports of clashes in parts of Manipur, Shah on Friday cancelled all his plans for the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka.

In light of the situation in Manipur, Shah also held two video-conference meetings and spoke with the chief ministers of Manipur and bordering states like Nagaland, Mizoram, and Assam on Thursday.

On Thursday, five Rapid Action Force (RAF) companies of the Central Reserve Police Force, as well as additional CAPF units, were dispatched to Manipur to keep the situation under control.

On May 3, Manipur witnessed violence at a rally held by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. The march was held in protest against the demand for inclusion of the state's Meitei community in the ST category, following an April 19 Manipur High Court directive.
