Namibian Cheetah ‘Shaurya’ dies at Kuno National Park

Namibian Cheetah Shaurya dies: In a tragic turn of events, another cheetah has been found dead at Kuno National Park this afternoon, marking the tenth big cat death. 

The deceased cheetah, identified as Namibian Cheetah ‘Shaurya’ died at around 3:17 pm. 


As per the statement by authorities and director of the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, at around 11 am in the morning, in coordination and staggering gait was observed by the tracking team following which the animal was tranquilized and weakness was found. 

Following this, the animal was revived but complications arose post revival and the animal failed to respond to CPR. Cause of death can be ascertained after post mortem.

The alarming death toll at the national park in Madhya Pradesh now includes a total of ten cheetahs. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had released the eight cheetahs (five females and three males) brought from Namibia at Kuno National Park on the occasion of his birthday on September 17, 2022, as part of an effort to revive the extinct cheetahs in India.

Another 12 cheetahs were brought from South Africa in February last year. The cheetah was declared extinct from India in 1952.

India has a long history of wildlife conservation. One of the most successful wildlife conservation ventures 'Project Tiger', which was initiated way back in 1972, has not only contributed to the conservation of tigers but also to the entire ecosystem.
