New Delhi in talks with Tehran over energy security: India on Hormuz blockade relief
PTC News Desk: Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday that India has held discussions with Iran regarding energy security and shipping but declined to provide further details amid concerns over possible disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking at a press conference, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said S. Jaishankar had held three conversations with his Iranian counterpart. “In their last conversation they discussed the issue of India’s energy security and shipping. Beyond that it would be premature for me to discuss,” the spokesperson said.
He was responding to questions about reports claiming that Iran had allowed oil shipments meant for India to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following Jaishankar’s conversation with his Iranian counterpart. Commenting on reports about two ships passing through the strategic waterway, Jaiswal said he did not have complete clarity on the matter but added that the government would provide a detailed update later in the evening.
The MEA also shared an update on Indian nationals currently in Iran, stating that around 9,000 Indians remain in the country. This includes students, seafarers, businesspersons and pilgrims. According to the ministry, many have already returned to India after the government issued an advisory on February 24.
The spokesperson added that since the start of the conflict, several Indians — particularly students — have been moved to safer locations. “We are facilitating all Indians who are willing to return to the country. Our mission is in touch with the Indian community. We are encouraging Indians who wish to return to come back,” the MEA said.
