New Delhi to stop buying Russian oil: Trump says as US, India seal trade deal after overnight call

PTC News Desk: US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a reduction in reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25 per cent to 18 per cent, shortly after holding a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The move signalled a thaw in India–US relations, which had recently been strained by steep trade duties.

Responding to Trump’s post on Truth Social, Prime Minister Modi said that “Made in India” products would now face a reduced tariff of 18 per cent. According to Reuters, the Trump administration has also decided to lift the additional 25 per cent tariff imposed over India’s purchase of Russian oil.

“We are also dropping the 25 per cent tariff following India’s agreement to stop buying Russian oil,” a White House official said.

Ahead of the announcement, Trump shared an image of himself with PM Modi on Truth Social without any caption. The image was the cover of India Today magazine’s Newsmakers of the Year 2025 edition, featuring both leaders.

This was followed by a post from Gor, which read, “Stay tuned,” adding that “President Trump just spoke with Prime Minister Modi.”
