Opposition's no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla defeated in Lok Sabha

PTC News Desk: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday rejected the opposition’s no-confidence motion seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla. The motion was defeated by a voice vote amid loud protests and sloganeering in the House.

After the vote, the House proceedings were adjourned for the day and will resume tomorrow at 11 am.

Opposition parties had moved the motion, accusing the Speaker of not running the House in an impartial manner. The government strongly rejected these allegations during a heated debate. When the Lok Sabha reconvenes, Om Birla will return to the chair and is also expected to make a statement about the behaviour of opposition members during the proceedings.

During the debate, Amit Shah, India’s Union Home Minister, strongly defended the Speaker and criticised the opposition for bringing the motion. He described the move as regrettable and said the Speaker acts as a neutral guardian of the House, representing both the ruling side and the opposition.

“According to the established history of this House, its proceedings are conducted based on mutual trust. The Speaker serves as a neutral custodian, representing both the ruling party and the opposition. It is unfortunate for parliamentary politics that a resolution for the removal of the Speaker has come,” he said.
