Parliament Winter Session begins today, showdown likely due to SIR face-off

PTC News Desk: The Winter session of the Parliament begins today, with several controversial issues likely to spark heated debates. Key flashpoints include the revision of voter lists, the death of an election officer in Bengal, and the FIR filed against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in the National herald case, which accuses them of criminal conspiracy.

The government plans to introduce 14 Bills during the session. Major proposals include the Atomic Energy Bill—intended to regulate atomic energy and allow private sector involvement—and the Higher Education Commission of India Bill, which seeks to create a central body to oversee higher education. Bills proposing excise duty and cess on tobacco products and pan masala will also be presented.

Opposition parties have demanded discussions on national security and the recent Delhi blast that killed 15 people. They also plan to raise concerns about the new Labour Codes, rising air pollution, economic stability, foreign policy, inflation, unemployment, and alleged interference by governors in state legislation.

Another key issue will be claims that funds for Opposition-ruled states are being delayed. This Winter Session will have only 15 sittings—shorter than the usual 20—making it one of the briefest in recent years. The Opposition has accused the government of undermining Parliament by shortening the session and restricting time for debate.
