Why Indians are welcome in Germany: Piyush Goyal explains

PTC Web Desk: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that Indians living abroad have earned respect because of the way they behave. Speaking to the Indian community in Berlin on the first leg of his two-day Germany trip, he pointed to their calm, law-abiding nature as the main reason host countries are happy to have them.

According to Goyal, people in Germany see Indians as family-focused and peaceful. “They live with their families and they care for their families,” he said.

He also compared this with the situation in other parts of Europe, where protests over the cost of living, wages and public services have been in the news. Countries such as France, Spain and Italy have seen large demonstrations. Most were peaceful, but some turned ugly, with clashes, looting and damage to property.

“You are very wanted and very welcome here,” Goyal told the gathering. “They know you don’t indulge in vandalism and you don’t go out on the streets and disturb society, like we are seeing in other parts of Europe.”

A request to help Indian students

The minister also asked settled Indians in Germany to look out for students arriving from India, especially those from modest financial backgrounds. A little help from fellow Indians, he said, can make it much easier for newcomers to settle into a new country and handle the stress of studying and living abroad.

He had kind words for Indian workers too, calling them sincere and hardworking. Goyal said the diaspora plays a big part in building closer ties between the people of India and Germany and in strengthening economic relations.

Meetings during the visit

During his stay, Goyal is meeting German government officials, business leaders and research institutions. The talks are aimed at boosting cooperation in trade, investment, advanced manufacturing and new technologies.
