Police arrest man accused of flashing at woman in Gurugram, incident sparks outrage
PTC News Desk: A model and digital content creator has alleged that she was sexually harassed while waiting for a cab in Gurugram.
The incident unfolded last Friday around 11 am, after she returned from Jaipur and was waiting for her ride. Soni Singh recorded the incident on her phone and attempted to contact the police and women's helpline but reportedly received no response.
After her multiple attempts to seek police intervention turned futile, she took to her social media and shared the incident publicly. It was only after then an FIR was filed.
On August 2, after being dropped at Rajiv Chowk, Singh booked a cab to her residence. While she waited, she noticed a man behaving suspiciously.
“He kept circling around and staring at me. At first, I ignored it, but then I realized his pants were unzipped. He continued to stare and began masturbating in front of me,” Singh recounted in a video she later posted online.
“He knew exactly what he was doing. It was meant to intimidate me. I felt disgusted and extremely uncomfortable,” she added.
Singh tried calling her cab driver for help, but got no response. To escape the situation, she booked another ride and returned home. She later shared the incident, along with photos of the man, on her Instagram and X accounts, expressing her shock and anger.
“I felt unsafe, helpless, and disgusted. Why are public spaces still not safe for women, even in broad daylight? Such predators must face strict action,” she wrote in her post.
She claimed that both the police and the women’s helpline were unresponsive. When she eventually got through, she was reportedly asked to visit the police station in person to file a complaint.
Social Media Uproar Sparks Action
On August 4, two days after the incident, Singh posted a detailed video describing what happened and urged the public to help identify the man. She also criticized ride-hailing platforms for failing to ensure passenger safety and called out her driver for being unresponsive.
It wasn’t until August 6—following widespread online outrage—that Gurugram Police issued a response, confirming that an FIR had been registered.
Police spokesperson Sandeep said efforts were underway to locate the accused, including reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
Soni Singh, who creates content related to beauty, skincare, and fashion, has a following of nearly 40,000 on Instagram.
