Relief to Prashant Umrao: SC asks BJP leader to apologise for his tweet on Bihar migrants in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, April 6: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Uttar Pradesh BJP spokesperson and advocate Prashant Umrao to apologise unconditionally for allegedly releasing a "fake" video regarding an "attack" on Bihari migrant workers in Tamil Nadu.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala also stated that Umrao should be more responsible before issuing such tweets. "He should be more responsible," the bench added.

The Supreme Court also granted Umrao relief by amending the High Court judgement and ordering him to appear before the Tamil Nadu police station on April 10.

It changed the terms imposed by the Madras High Court, which required him to report to the police station from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. every day for 15 days while giving him anticipatory bail.

"The condition requiring the petitioner (Umrao) to report to the police station between 10.30 am to 5.30 pm for 15 days is modified. He shall appear on Monday at 10 am and thereafter as and when required by the investigating officer," the bench stated.

The Supreme Court also issued a notice to Tamil Nadu on Umrao's petition for the amalgamation of FIRs filed against him in several police stations in connection with his tweet.

The bench stated that the anticipatory bail granted to Umrao by a single High Court judge will be applicable to any FIR filed in Tamil Nadu.

The State's senior attorney, Mukul Rohatgi, told the bench that the other FIRs do not name Umrao as an accused.

Senior counsel Siddharth Luthra, who is representing Umrao, stated that there was an error in the tweet and that when he realised it, he deleted it, and that there are now many FIRs against the young man.

Umrao petitioned the Supreme Court for the consolidation of the FIRs filed against him in various police stations in connection with his tweet, as well as an appeal against the condition placed by the Madras High Court while granting him anticipatory bail.
