'Serious societal risk': Supreme Court Judge on issue of deepfakes

Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant, delving into the issue of deepfakes said that "it is a matter of great concern." However, social media was a key emphasis of Justice Surya Kant, when he addressed the critical issue dominating the Indian news landscape, the "Issue of Deepfakes."

"Deepfake is manipulating perceptions, and it compromises the foundation of truth and trust, which is a matter of great concern. Deepfakes have led to tarnishing individual's reputations", said the SC Judge. He also called it a serious societal risk that needs action.

The Chief Justice began his keynote address by discussing the relationship between law and social media, continuing a speech he gave at the 1st Dialogue on the issue of media responsibility in legal reporting in November 2022.

According to Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant, the media serves as a vital link between the legal system and the public, with the ability to both strengthen and undermine the authority of justice.

'The media is a bridge between the legal realm and the public. It can bolster and also undermine the power of justice', said Justice Surya Kant, reminding the media of its responsibility during his address at the Second Law and Constitution Dialogue at the NDMC Convention Centre in Delhi.

He warned journalists against spreading fake news and breaking stories too quickly, which could distort public understanding, and urged the media to prioritise commitment to truth, objectivity, and accuracy.

He warned journalists about fake news and the rush to break stories that can distort public understanding and urged them to commit to truth, objectivity, and accuracy.

To address the scope of the problem, Justice Surya Kant recalled the viral Hillary Clinton video, which was a deepfake.

"Hillary Clinton's video showed her torturing a young girl," he said, emphasising the impact it would have on ordinary citizens who might not be able to fight these manipulations.

"We must ensure that AI humanity progresses towards truth," Justice Surya Kant said, calling for serious deliberations and actions.

In addition to deepfakes, Justice Surya Kant addressed the issue of fake news on social media and cyberbullying on social media.

"The introduction of paid verification added fuel to the fire," Justice Surya Kant warned.

The Supreme Court Judge also proposed solutions such as enacting comprehensive laws to combat fake news and establishing governance boards through social media platforms, both of which could be critical steps in addressing the problem.
