Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas 2024 is observed on January 30th each year to honor the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated on this day in 1948

Better known as the Mahatma, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or great soul, ‘Father of Nation’ or our ‘Beloved Bappu’, Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar in Gujarat. He was an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who led the independence movement against British rule.

Iconic leader Gandhi played a remarkable, pivotal and unforgettable role in the freedom struggle of India against British colonial rule. His leadership, philosophy, and methods of nonviolent resistance had a profound impact on the Indian independence movement.


Shaheed Diwas 2024: History 

‘Father of Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi renowned for his nonviolent philosophy, or "Satyagraha," which means "truth force" or "soul force” and believed that peaceful resistance was a great tool for confronting injustice and oppression was assassinated in New Delhi by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, who opposed Gandhi's inclusive ideology and approach towards communal harmony. On that fateful evening of January 30, 1948 Gandhi was on his way to his prayer meeting, when Godse approached him and fired three shots at close range. Despite being rushed to the Birla House, where he later succumbed to his injuries, Mahatma Gandhi passed away.

Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas holds immense significance as a day of remembrance and tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's tireless efforts and ultimate sacrifice for India's independence. The day also reflects the values of non-violence, truth, and justice that Gandhi espoused throughout his life.
The date January 30th is also marked as respect for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country. 

Gandhi's role in shaping India's destiny and his influence on the world stage make him an unforgettable figure in history, symbolising the power of moral courage and nonviolent resistance in the pursuit of justice and freedom.
