Snow and rainfall prompt closure of 168 roads across Himachal Pradesh

PTC News Desk: Himachal Pradesh faced disruptive weather conditions as snowfall and rainfall pounded various parts of the state, leading to the closure of 168 roads, including three National Highways. While higher reaches and tribal areas experienced a fresh spell of snow, low and middle hills were battered by intermittent hail and rains on Saturday. The local Meteorological office has forecasted a wet spell in the region until April 4.

An unfortunate incident occurred when a Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus overturned near Maling in the Kinnaur district after skidding on the snow-covered road on Saturday morning. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported in the accident.

Heavy snowfall resulted in traffic coming to a standstill at the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang near Manali. Several areas, including Kalpa and Kukumseri, received significant snowfall, with Kalpa recording 5 cm and Keylong 3 cm in the past 24 hours. The adverse weather conditions have led to the closure of 168 roads across the state, with the majority of closures affecting difficult terrain areas in Lahaul and Spiti. As many as 159 roads remain impassable in these regions.

In addition to snowfall, intermittent rains accompanied by lightning and gusty winds were observed in Shimla, the state capital, and surrounding areas. Solan also faced challenges with hailstorms affecting commuting in the region.

The local Meteorological office has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms, lightning, hail, heavy rains, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) at isolated places in seven out of the 12 districts in the state on Saturday. With adverse weather conditions prevailing, authorities are urging residents and travelers to exercise caution and stay updated on weather forecasts for their safety.
