Suspected LeT terrorist drowns in river in escape attempt, family alleges custodial death

PTC News Desk: The body of a 23-year old man who is believed to be associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was recovered from a stream after he was detained for questioning over alleged terror links. The police has claimed that he died after he jumped into the stream in an attempt to ecape, while his family has alleged custodial death. 


The deceased has been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmed who was detained over suspicion of being a member of a Lashkar-e-Taiba sleeper cell. According to police, they took him to a hideout location for identification, when he jumped into the fast-flowing Vaishow stream in an attempt to flee and drowned.

According to the police, the alleged came to light during the encounter investigation that broke out on April 23 when two terrorists escaped after a brief exchange of fire. According to the reports, IMtiyaz also confirmed his links with lashkar and having known its hidouts. It is then police then took him to the location when he tried to flee and umped into a stream and drowned. 

Following the incident, the family of Imtiyaz have alleged that he was killed in the police custody alleging foul play. 

The latest death has triggered widespread outrage across the Union Territory, with political leaders demanding accountability.
