Tesla signals entry into Indian market as company begins hiring, days after PM Modi-Elon Musk meet
PTC News Desk: Tesla has surely planned to enter the Indian market as the company has begun hiring in India.
The electric vehicle manufacturer posted job listings for 13 positions on its LinkedIn page on Monday, ranging from customer-facing roles to back-end positions.
At least five of the positions, such as service technician and various advisory roles, were available in both Mumbai and Delhi. The remaining roles, including customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, were specific to Mumbai.
Tesla has had intermittent discussions with India over the years, but the company had been hesitant to enter the market due to concerns over high import taxes. Recently, India reduced the basic customs duty on luxury cars priced over $40,000 from 110% to 70%.
India’s electric vehicle market is still in its early stages compared to China’s, but it offers a growth opportunity for Tesla as the company looks to expand into new regions. Tesla has been experiencing a global sales slowdown and recently reported its first annual decline in EV sales in over ten years.
The company's move to enter India follows a recent meeting between Prime Minister Modi, Elon Musk, and former US President Donald Trump in Washington. After the meeting, Trump stated that Modi had agreed to start trade talks aimed at reducing the US-India trade deficit and increasing US military sales, including discussions about supplying F-35 fighter jets to India.
