Thaw in India Canada ties: Jaishankar speaks to Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand
PTC News Desk: In a step towards bringing a thaw in diplomatic relations, Dr. S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand the first high-level political engagement between the two nations since Mark Carney became the Canadian Prime Minister.
The conversation focused on strengthening economic cooperation and advancing mutual priorities which comes following former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's exit under whose leadership the ties strained significantly.
"Discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties. Wished her a very successful tenure," Jaishankar posted on X after the call.
Anand, who was sworn in earlier this month, described the conversation as "productive".
"Thank you Minister @DrSJaishankar for the productive discussion today on strengthening Canada–India ties, deepening our economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities. I look forward to continuing our work together," she said in a post on X.
The diplomatic ties between both the nations took a backseat after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blatantly accused Indian agents of potentially being involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India rejected the claim as "absurd and motivated" while maintaining that Canada is a safe haven for pro-Khalistan elements.
