Turkey-Syria earthquake: One Indian missing, 10 stuck in remote parts, says Centre

Turkey-Syria earthquake: The Central government on Wednesday said one Indian was missing in Turkey earthquake, which has left a trail of destruction. 

"We set up a control room in Turkey's Adana. 10 Indians are stuck in remote parts of affected areas but they are safe. One Indian national who was on a business visit is missing. We're in touch with his family and the company in Bengaluru which employs him," said  MEA Secretary West Sanjay Verma.


India is rushing a fresh team of the NDRF along with other necessary equipment to Turkey. Two teams were already on ground in Turkey and had launched rescue operations at multiple collapsed structures, NDRF Director General Atul Karwal said on Wednesday.

India has extended humanitarian support to Turkey which was hit by powerful earthquake on Monday. An Indian Air Force C17 flight with over 50 personnel from the NDRF and a specially trained dog squad along with necessary equipment, including medical supplies, drilling machines and other equipment required for the aid efforts departed for Turkey on Tuesday.

Trail of destruction

Earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8, 7.5, 6.7, 6.0 and 5.4 have hit Turkish regions and its neighbouring country Syria, leaving behind trail of destruction.

This is the strongest quake to hit the region in over 100 years.  The World Health Organisation has warned that the fatalities due to the Turkey-Syria earthquake could exceed 20,000. In Turkey's Hatay province, the only runway at the airport has also been shattered.  The rescue teams are still looking for survivors in the rubbles.

As per reports, at least 70 countries had offered help in the rescue operation.
