Delhi: 13 councilors quit AAP, announce formation of new party
PTC News Desk: In a major blow to Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, 13 councilors have resigned from the party. Meanwhile the councilors have also announced formation of separate party. The rebel leaders include Mukesh Goel, who was the Leader of the House for AAP in the MCD.
The rebel councilors have announced formation of separate faction under the banner Indraprastha Vikas Party. Goel had a massive defeat in state assembly elections where he contested on AAP ticket from Adarsh Nagar.
The development comes just days after the BJP regained control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by winning the civic elections, which were boycotted by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
This latest setback for AAP in Delhi follows its defeat in the Assembly elections earlier this year. Since then, the party has been grappling with internal discord.
In an effort to address the growing dissatisfaction within its ranks, AAP undertook an organisational restructuring in March. Former minister Saurabh Bharadwaj was appointed as the new president of the party’s Delhi unit, while former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia was assigned responsibility for Punjab, which is set to hold elections in two years.
Additionally, Gopal Rai was made the party’s in-charge for Gujarat, and AAP's national general secretary Sandeep Pathak was appointed as the special in-charge for Chhattisgarh.
