Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra vacates government bungalow

New Delhi, January 19: Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, who faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha last month on charges of unethical conduct, has complied with the eviction notice to vacate her government bungalow in New Delhi. The eviction notice, issued by the Directorate of Estates, mandated her immediate departure, warning of potential eviction by force if she failed to comply.

In response to the eviction notice, Mahua Moitra's lawyers confirmed that she had voluntarily vacated House number 9B Telegraph Lane by 10 am on January 19, 2023. The lawyers handed over possession to the Directorate of Estates, emphasising that the premises were vacated before the authorities arrived, and there was no need for forced eviction.

The Centre's strongly worded notice asserted that Mahua Moitra had been given ample opportunity to vacate the government bunglow, but had not proven her right to continue occupying the premises. The Directorate of Estates, responsible for managing government properties, explicitly stated that if she did not vacate voluntarily, she and any other occupant risked eviction using force as deemed necessary.

Despite seeking relief from the Delhi High Court, Mahua Moitra faced disappointment as the court refused to stay the eviction order on Thursday. Justice Girish Kathpalia noted that no specific rule had been presented to the court regarding the eviction of MPs from government accommodation once they cease to be lawmakers.

Her expulsion from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023, stemmed from allegations of "unethical conduct." She was accused of accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani and sharing her user ID and password for the Parliament website with him. The expulsion marked a significant development in her political career and was followed by the eviction proceedings from the government bungalow.

As of the latest developments, Mahua Moitra has relinquished her government accommodation, complying with the eviction notice, and legal processes are underway to ensure due diligence in the vacated premises.
