PM Modi to shift office to ‘Seva Teerth’ complex on Makar Sankranti, ending South Block era
PTC Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to move into his new office this week, coinciding with Makar Sankranti on January 14, marking a historic transition in India’s administrative landscape. The new office is located at the ‘Seva Teerth’ complex, developed under the ambitious Central Vista Redevelopment Project.
The Seva Teerth complex has been planned as the new Executive Enclave and will house three key institutions, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Cabinet Secretariat and the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), each in separate buildings. The PMO will function from ‘Seva Teerth-1’, a newly constructed building featuring contemporary workspaces and large ceremonial halls, designed around the central theme of ‘seva’ or service.
The relocation signifies the end of an era, as the PMO has operated from the iconic South Block since India gained independence in 1947. The Cabinet Secretariat has already moved into ‘Seva Teerth-2’ in September last year, while ‘Seva Teerth-3’ will soon accommodate the office of the National Security Advisor.
Once vacated, the historic South and North Blocks will be transformed into a public museum named ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat Sangrahalaya’. To support the project, an agreement was signed on December 19, 2024, with France’s Museum Development Agency for technical cooperation in developing the museum.
The Seva Teerth premises, spread over 2,26,203 square feet, is being constructed at a cost of Rs 1,189 crore by Larsen & Toubro. In addition, a new official residence for the Prime Minister, tentatively called ‘Executive Enclave Part 2’, is also coming up nearby.
