Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia's mother Madhvi Raje passes away after prolonged illness

Madhvi Raje passes away: Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia's mother, Madhavi Raje, passed away at AIIMS, New Delhi, on Wednesday. 

 She had been on ventilator support in the final days and succumbed at 9:28 am.


Madhavi Raje was admitted to Delhi AIIMS prior to the third phase of Lok Sabha polling. She battled pneumonia along with sepsis.

Her final rites will take place in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.

An official statement from Scindia's office reads, "It is with profound sadness that we wish inform that Rajmata (Madhvi Raje) is no more. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia's mother and the Rajmata of the Gwalior royal family, Madhvi Raje was under treatment at AIIMS, Delhi over the last few months. Her condition was said to be critical over the past couple of months. She breathed her last at 9.28 am today. Om Shanti!" 

Who was Madhavi Raje Scindia?

  • Madhavi Raje Sahib Scindia was the daughter of an Army General from Madhesh Province, Nepal, and a great-granddaughter of Nepal's Prime Minister and Maharaja of Kaski and Lamjung, Juddha Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana.
  • She had two children: a daughter, Chitrangada Singh and a son, Jyotiraditya Scindia
  • Madhavi Raje Sahib Scindia was married to Madhavrao Jivajirao Scindia – who was an Indian politician and a minister in the Government of India.

  • Madhavi Raje Sahib Scindia was chairperson of 24 charitable trusts which give assistance in fields such as education and medical car. 
  • She was President of the Board of Governors of the Scindias Kanya Vidyalaya, which provides education to girls
  • She also created the Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia II gallery in the palace museum, in the memory of her late husband.
