Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrives in Punjab, visits flood-hit border districts

After landing in Amritsar, he headed to Ghonewal village in Ajnala and engaged with people to assess the damage caused by the floods.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrives in Punjab, visits flood-hit border districts

PTC News Desk: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday arrived in Punjab and visited flood-hit areas of Amritsar and interacted with those affected by nature's fury.


He was accompanied by Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and other party leaders.

After landing in Amritsar, he headed to Ghonewal village in Ajnala and engaged with people to assess the damage caused by the floods. 

Ghonewal village is among several areas in Ajnala that was severely affected by the floodwaters. 

Gandhi is also scheduled to visit flood-hit Gurdaspur district. 

Rahul Gandhi's Punjab visit comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the flood-hit areas in the state and took stock of the situation. He also announced a relief package of Rs1600 crore for the disaster-affected state. 

Punjab battled one of the worst floods in decades with all the 23 districts under the grip of natural calamity. According to the official data, over 1.98 lakh hectares of crop land have been affected. The worst-hit districts include Gurdaspur (40,169 ha), Patiala (17,690 ha), Tarn Taran (12,828 ha), Fazilka (25,182 ha), Ferozepur (17,257 ha) and Kapurthala (17,574 ha). The death toll has reached 56.
