Firing at wedding in Ludhiana leaves two dead, several injured; groom booked, six held

PTC News Desk: Two people were killed and one person was injured after a fight and gunfire broke out between two groups at a wedding in Ludhiana late Saturday night. The police have arrested six people so far. The wedding was for contractor Varinder Kapoor, who had invited both groups — led by Ankur and Shubham Mota.

According to sources, Ankur’s group reached the venue — Bath Castle Palace on Pakhowal Road — first. When Shubham Mota’s group arrived, the two sides came face to face and began arguing over a small issue. The argument quickly turned into a physical fight, during which hosiery businessman JK Dawar from Ankur’s side was injured. Shots were fired soon after, killing two people and causing panic among guests.

The people who died were identified as the groom’s friend, Vasu Chopra, and his relative, Neetu Chhabra. By the time the police reached the spot, the shooters had already escaped. Dawar was taken to DMC Hospital.

A cross-FIR was registered against both groups. Those named include Ankur, Jasvir, Rubal Pradhan, JK Dawar, Shubham Mota, and Yuvraj Singh, along with others yet to be identified. The groom, Varinder, was also booked for inviting people with a criminal background.

Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said early investigation shows the incident started from a minor disagreement between two youngsters, and it was not a gang war as claimed on social media. Six people have been detained, and cases have been filed under the relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

An FIR was also filed against the management of the marriage palace for not following security rules. The commissioner added that some of the youths involved had past records of fights and were drunk at the time. He said the remaining accused will be arrested soon, and gun licences will be cancelled if licensed weapons were used, while illegal weapons will be seized.
