Floods trap 400 students, 40 staff members and principal at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Gurdaspur’s Daburi village

PTC Web Desk: In a worrying development, around 400 students and 40 staff members, including the principal, are trapped inside Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Daburi, Gurdaspur, after floodwaters entered the campus on Tuesday. The students, many of whom were residing in the hostel, have been shifted to the second floor for safety.

According to school principal Naresh Kumar, floodwaters from the Ravi river breached embankments and advanced nearly 9 km inland, submerging several nearby villages before reaching Daburi. The water has surrounded the school premises, leaving nearly five feet of stagnant water inside the campus.

“The situation is critical. About 400 students from different classes, along with 40 teachers and staff members, are trapped in the school. We are safe for now on the upper floors, but urgent evacuation is needed,” Principal Naresh Kumar told reporters over the phone.

The flood has not only affected the school but also several villages along its path, with water reportedly moving rapidly towards the Kalanaur side. Residents in the surrounding areas are also facing severe challenges as homes and fields remain inundated.

The school administration has raised an urgent appeal for help from the district authorities.
