Harjot Singh Bains performs 'sewa' at Sri Anandpur Sahib as part of religious atonement for Srinagar event row
PTC News Desk: Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday performed 'sewa' and cleaned the shoes of the devotees at Sri Anandpur Sahib as part of the religious atonement.
The "tankha" was imposed by five Sikh high priests, including the officiating Jathedar of the Akal Takht, for permitting song and dance during an event commemorating Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th martyrdom anniversary in Srinagar — an act deemed a violation of Sikh maryada (code of conduct).
While accepting the tankha with humility, Bains expressed that as a Sikh, he would fulfill all the directives issued by Akal Takht to seek forgiveness and uphold Sikh traditions. Devotees witnessed his service seeing the act as a powerful reaffirmation of humility and reverence.
As part of the religious punishment, Bains began his journey on foot to Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal in Amritsar. In addition, he walked 100 metre barefoot to Gurdwara Valla Sahib.
His atonement journey also included a visit to Baba Bakala Sahib, ollowed by travel to Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Delhi. Bains also visited Sri Anandpur Sahib, where he will perform two days of voluntary service (sewa), including cleaning footwear and sweeping the gurdwara premises at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib located there.
