A case of alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct has come to light during the Ludhiana West byelection. On the evening of June 18, local residents in the Shimlapuri area intercepted a truck (registration number PB10HT6152) loaded with ration, which was allegedly being used to influence voters.
A police team reached the scene promptly, initiated an investigation, and seized the vehicle. The driver, identified as Amarjeet Singh alias Vicky, a resident of Ratanheri in Khanna, has been booked under Section 173 of the Indian Penal Code.
The police said further investigation is underway and warned that any breach of election laws would not be tolerated.

There is speculation that if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wins this byelection, the party may consider sending its national convener Arvind Kejriwal to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab’s quota. However, for that to happen, AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora must secure a win in this contest.
This is also why Arvind Kejriwal himself, along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, joined the campaign trail in Ludhiana West and participated in a roadshow to boost the party’s chances.
The Ludhiana West Assembly seat fell vacant following the death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi (57). Gogi died of a gunshot wound around four months ago. At the time of the incident, he was having a meal. Upon hearing the gunshot from another room, his wife Sukhchain Kaur and son Vishwas rushed in and found him lying in a pool of blood.
A post-mortem was conducted at DMC Hospital, which revealed that the bullet entered from the right side of his head and exited from the left, passing through entirely. He was later cremated at the cremation ground near KVM School in Ludhiana.
Congress bets on Ashu, AAP fields Sanjeev Arora
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora from this seat. Following the announcement, Arora has been actively engaging with the public, highlighting development work. A businessman by profession, he has also been seen appealing to the industrial community.
On the other hand, the Congress party has nominated former Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who has twice been elected MLA from this constituency. Ashu once held strong influence in the area, but in 2022, he lost to the AAP wave.
SAD picks Advocate Ghuman
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has chosen Advocate Parupkar Singh Ghuman in a bid to revive its hold on the seat. A lawyer by profession, Ghuman is known for handling the high-profile Dilroj case, where he secured a death sentence for the woman who buried the child alive in sand. The case is currently under appeal in the High Court.

Gupta, who has served twice as BJP’s state general secretary, is a car accessories and automobile dealer. With an RSS background, he has been active in politics for over 35 years.
