Akal Takht Jathedar flays alleged misconduct with Sikh students at Panjab University, demands action

PTC Web Desk: The acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, has strongly condemned the alleged high-handedness against Sikh students at Panjab University in Chandigarh, calling for strict action against the officials responsible.

In a statement issued on Monday, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj criticised the university administration for what he described as unjustified action against students associated with Sikh-ideology student organisations. The students had reportedly raised objections regarding an event organised to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

He said if students had concerns about the event, it was the fundamental duty of the university administration to listen to them rather than resort to forceful measures. Jathedar Gargaj described the alleged behaviour of authorities as unacceptable and contrary to democratic values.

The acting Jathedar also expressed serious concern over the role of the Chandigarh Police during the protest. He alleged that police personnel used force against the protesting students and even removed the turbans of some Sikh students, which he termed an act of grave disrespect toward Sikh religious identity and the sacred articles of faith.

“Such actions cannot be tolerated under any circumstances,” Jathedar Gargaj said, urging the administration to take strict action against the officials responsible for the incident.

Referring to the teachings of Guru Tegh Bahadur, he added that Sikh philosophy emphasises living without fear and without instilling fear in others. He said the alleged conduct of the Chandigarh and university administrations was completely contrary to the teachings of the Sikh Guru.

Jathedar Gargaj further asserted that the right to protest is a fundamental right of students and their voices cannot be suppressed through coercion or intimidation. He called upon the authorities to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents from recurring.
